Chiropractic is the most frequently used alternative healthcare discipline. "Chiropractic" comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." "Chiropractor" is the practitioner, one who employs the techniques. Chiropractic is a health care discipline that emphasizes the body's natural ability to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractors focus on the spine because it is the bony framework that protects the Central nervous system (Brain and Spinal Cord). The nervous system is extremely important because it is the "Master Controller" of all of our body’s systems ie) Cardiovascular System, Musculoskeletal system, Digestive System, etc.. The nervous system is delicate and delivers an enormous amount of information to and from the brain, causing our body to function at its "norma" capacity. Your spinal column is a series of movable bones that begin at the base of your skull and ends in the center of your hips. Thirty-three pairs of spinal nerves extend down the spine from the brain, extend from the spinal cord and exit through a series of openings in your spinal column. Trillions of messages are sent to and from the brain in less than a second. Stress, automobile accidents, falls, tension, chemical imbalances and a variety of other factors cause your spinal joints (Vertebrae) to become misaligned. The term misalignment is often referred to as a subluxation in the Chiropractor’s office. Subluxation of the vertebrae causes structural, functional and pathological changes within a vertebral joint. This ultimately affects the neural transmission of nerve impulses affecting tissue, organs and systems consequently placing our bodies in a "dis-eased" state. Chiropractors remove subluxations with their skilled hands by performing the chiropractic "adjustment" aka chiropractic manipulation, which is the correction of the subluxation complex. Some Chiropractors use other instrumentation and techniques to deliver the adjustment. Under normal circumstances the adjustment does not hurt. The treatment is usually quick and painless, but most importantly it is extremely safe. Your doctor may use other equipment to decrease pain and facilitate healing. Electrophysical therapy equipment is often used along with other advanced technological equipment to aid your progress. Patients are treated on specialized tables to increase joint mobility, decrease pain and decrease scar tissue formation. Your doctor will use these modalities at the appropriate point in your care plan. In addition to Chiropractic care, we believe that there are a total of five factors of health you should incorporate into your lifestyle to improve your body's natural ability to obtain/maintain wellness. They are rest, proper nutrition, exercise, positive mental attitude and the chiropractic adjustment. Throughout your treatment plan these factors will be discussed and your doctor will help you reach your goals in health by implementing each. |
